The Magnolias is listed on the American Buildings Survey of Architecture and sited in the National Register of Historic Places. It also bears a Texas Historic Survey medallion. Although built after the Civil War, it is strongly Greek Revival in character and an example of the appeal of this style in Texas long after its abandonment in the East. The home was built by Dan Nelson Alley, co-founder of Jefferson, as a dowry gift for his daughter, Victoria, in 1867. The Magnolias was originally conceived as a modest townhouse. The dining room and kitchen area, the two largest rooms in the house with 15 ceilings, were not added until the 1870s along with the steep stairs in the back hall. The floors are wide heart of pine and the ceilings are cypress. Some of the outstanding architectural features of the home include the windows facing the front and rear galleries with six over nine panes extending to the gallery floor for strolling outside on a warm evening. The central hall is divided into two parts by an ornate, wooden, elliptical arch. The double drawing rooms on the east side of the hall are separated by a fine pair of sliding pocket doors with etched glazed panels. Also of interest are two cabinets by the front door. One is a gun closet and the other is fake that was said to be a secret crawl space to the attic for outlook purposes during the reconstruction era when a group called the White Knights met in the home. Carefully restored and enhanced as a comfortably refined home of extraordinary character, this property is noted for its elegant details and tasteful ensemble of entertainment and living areas. This Greek Revival home embodies timeless, classic elements making it a genuine charmer. With 2,864 square feet, two stories, seven bedrooms, three full bathrooms, two half bathrooms, a lovely sun-porch, front and back porches and a spacious yard with towering magnolias, this home of rich heritage and beauty allows gracious living with updated, modern conveniences. The kitchen boasts an AGA stove, a fireplace, stainless steel appliances and a large pantry/mudroom. The homes two front bedrooms open onto a central hallway as does the parlor which can also double as a bedroom. With multiple living spaces, four bedrooms and two bathrooms, the upstairs offers a versatile layout. This home of great history, quality and craftsmanship is a jewel of Jefferson. Its overall ambiance and charm make it the perfect destination for most venues. Come make this picturesque property yours. The home is currently run as a bed and breakfast on VRBO and Air BNB. The home is being sold turnkey.
